Another year, another Portis quote

I didn’t realize it’s nearly exactly a year since my last Charles Portis quote post, but I stumbled across this today. From “Masters of Atlantis,” Gnomon Society leading light Austin Popper’s experience as hostage of 3 leftist women:

“At first I thought it was merely to instruct me in their doctrines. They explained to me why it was necessary to transform this country into the likeness of one of those countries where they can arrest you for laughing in bed. Padlock the churches, bludgeon the dogs, gas the poets — they outlined the entire program for me. They also tried to do something called ‘raising my consciousness.’ This was a fairly humorous business, their fumbling efforts to break down my natural resistance to nonsense and falsehood. […N]ow and then they would pop their heads into my room at night and shout one of their beliefs at me. ‘It’s all blind chance!’ and ‘No more private gardens!’”

Turns out (Spoiler alert!) they were fattening him up to eat him — I suspect this goes beyond the normal behavior of leftists but what do I know.
